Hawthorn Hawks vs North Melbourne Kangaroos Preview

Alastair Clarkson will be hoping to pull the ultimate April Fool’s prank against his former side on Saturday.

North Melbourne has been everyone’s favourite fairytale to begin the season, earning a clean sweep over both West Australian teams in narrow fashion.

Last week’s ending against Fremantle has created a stir, but there’s no question the Roos were the rightful winners in the end. Nick Larkey, Harry Sheezel, and Luke Davies-Uniacke have been electric to begin the year, while it’s worth noting North has been the third-best team when it comes to tackling – a vast improvement on last season.

As for the Hawks, the same can’t be said.

Fans of the brown and gold knew they were in for a thin year, but last week’s 81-point belting against the Swans was concerning from such a proud club.

Hawthorn’s pressure rating has been historically bad through the first two rounds, and just like a week earlier against Essendon, the back line spent most of the game in complete disarray.

Losing so much experience was always going to hurt the Hawks, but Sam Mitchell’s aggressive approach to game planning leads to a number of turnovers, which defensively, they aren’t set up to defend.

Clarkson clearly has his players believing, and for the first time in what feels like years, it’s clear North actually has defenders they can rely upon.

Griffin Logue was huge down back last week, and with the Hawks still lacking any clear direction up forward, he’ll likely play another big part in this one.

Feelings might be amicable between Clarko and Hawthorn, but we all know he’d love nothing more than to beat his old club – especially in Tassie.

Plenty of rain is forecast during the week, so for mine, this has low-scoring North win written all over it.
