Hill to make AFL debut for GWS

The latest GWS debutant wants to make sure everyone knows him by his nickname, with Ian ‘Bobby’ Hill to play his first AFL game on Sunday against Richmond at the MCG.

A speedy forward and outside midfielder, 19-year-old Hill was taken by GWS in the second round of the 2018 national draft.

The Giants traded up from 27 to 24 to get the West Australian, who is a cousin of Fremantle stars Stephen and Bradley Hill.

Saturday’s game won’t be his first at the MCG.

“I did (play there) once in the AFL academy ages ago now,” Hill said

Hill and the club have made it clear he prefers to be know as Bobby, the nickname bestowed upon him by his grandfather as a child because of his love for children’s cartoon Bob the Builder.

He will wear the number 37.

“I like the number, my two favourite numbers were three and seven,” Hill told the GWS website.

“Really what I got it for was Goodesy (Adam Goodes) as he wore it at the Swans.

“He’s a big role model for all of us indigenous and non-indigenous players in the AFL and not in AFL.”
