It’s not about me: Tigers AFL hero Martin

Dusty Martin thinks it’s “cool”.

The Richmond megastar is the sole AFL player to win two Norm Smith medals, two premiership medals and a Brownlow medal.

“It’s always cool when you get those kind of things,” Martin said.

“But take all the individual stuff away.

“I just couldn’t be prouder to get this (premiership) medal here today and the other one a couple of years ago.

“That is what you play footy for. That is why I play a team sport.”

Martin plays it better than anyone in the league at the moment.

He kicked four goals, had 22 disposals including four inside 50s and directly set up two majors to teammates.

But even those healthy statistics don’t do justice to Martin’s impact in an 89-point thrashing of GWS.

“He’s funny, the big fella beside me, he’ll get embarrassed talking about it,” Tigers coach Damien Hardwick said, flanked by Martin in his post-match media conference.

“But the way he can just influence a game is incredible.

“He works really, really hard both physically and mentally on his game … we’re so fortunate to have a player as him represent our great club.

“He will go down now as one of the all-time greats – two-time premiership, two-time Norm Smith. Oh, a Brownlow too – I forgot that.”

Martin joins Gary Ayres, Andrew McLeod and Luke Hodge as the only players to win two Norm Smith medals.

But the Tiger ace deflects when pressed about his individual achievements.

“The thing that I love about this footy club is we don’t actually really care who gets the touches, who kicks the goals,” Martin said.

“I’m lucky enough to get the recognition.

“But the thing I love about the team is we all play our role.

“It was my today – it was someone else last week. I just love how we don’t really care about any of that stuff.”

Now, to find space for another tattoo.

“I didn’t actually get a 2017 premiership tattoo so I’m definitely going to get one for the both – for sure, 100 per cent,” he said.
