Lion uncomfortable with AFL’s best talk

Best small forward in the AFL? All Charlie Cameron knows is he’s the best small forward in his family – for now.

The Brisbane star kicked five goals in a dynamic display as the Lions thrashed St Kilda on the weekend to reignite their 2019 season.

Cameron’s display had some arguing he’s the best small forward in the competition but getting the wood over little brother Jarrod was all that the Lion was concerned about.

Jarrod kicked two goals on debut for West Coast last Thursday but Charlie made sure he reminded him of the pecking order following his own haul.

“I sent him a video saying, ‘you only kicked two, chin up mate’,” Cameron said.

Jokes aside, Cameron was thrilled for his younger brother to get a chance and was hopeful he’ll retain his spot for the Eagles’ clash with Hawthorn on Saturday.

“It’s good banter between me and him. Hopefully he can get a game next week with Willie Rioli coming back in,” Cameron said.

“I thought he played well on the weekend.”

Lions coach Chris Fagan lauded Cameron after his display in the 56-point win over the Saints which erased memories of their shock loss to Carlton before the round 13 bye.

Fagan said Cameron was “close” to the best small forward in the league but the 24-year-old believes there’s plenty of competition for that honour.

“It’s always good when people are saying that but there’s other good small forwards out there,” he said.

“I’m competing with Michael Walters, (Jordan) de Goey, Eddie Betts and them.

“You always watch them, see how they’re going and try and match it with them.”
