Lions’ AFL ruckman Hudson retires

He might have proven invaluable this year but Brisbane AFL ruckman Ben Hudson announced on Tuesday he had hung up his boots for good.

The 33-year-old ex-Western Bulldog came out of retirement at the end of the 2011 season to link up as the Lions’ “back-up” ruckman – and they were so glad he did.

Hudson became one of the first players picked by Lions’ coach Michael Voss after No.1 ruckman Matthew Leuenberger succumbed to a season-ending Achilles injury in round three.

He ended up playing 18 games for the Lions this year.

“I’ve had a great year at the Brisbane Lions and I’m very grateful to the club for giving me the opportunity to play this game that I love for another year,” Hudson said.

“Now I’m looking forward to watching from the stands.

“I look forward to remaining in the football industry in some capacity in the years to come.”

In all, Hudson – who also had a stint with Adelaide – played 161 AFL games in nine seasons.

“Although Ben’s time at the Lions was very short, his positive attitude, on-field leadership and sense of humour will be missed by the playing group and staff alike,” Lions’ general manager Dean Warren said.

Hudson becomes the third Lion to retire after the 2012 season, joining Amon Buchanan and Josh Drummond.
