Lions end AFL season on a high

Brisbane’s eight-goal second term and a starring performance by Daniel Rich ensured the Lions ended their season on a positive note, trouncing the Western Bulldogs by 67 points at the Gabba on Sunday night.

Rich was best-on-ground with 25 disposals, 11 inside-50s and four goals – his last coming right on fulltime – as the Lions won 19.14 (128) to 9.7 (61) to claim three consecutive victories for the first time this year in front of 18,289 fans.

The Lions triumphed by 58 points the last time the two teams met back in round 13, coincidentally the first loss of the Bulldogs’ 11-match losing streak.

After a dour first quarter, the Lions kicked into gear soon after the first change, with Rich proving an instrumental factor in his side’s improved display.

Rich kicked two goals in the second, as well as setting up captain Jonathan Brown’s first with a pinpoint kick into the forward pocket.

Brown’s second of the quarter blew the lead out to 32 points within 10 minutes, and the one-way traffic continued into halftime.

The Bulldogs didn’t score their first goal until midway through the second term, and while the game was all but over by then, they did manage to kick five in the final term.

Brown kicked a game-high five goals, while Pearce Hanley (one goal, 22 disposals) and Claye Beams (one goal, 26 disposals) were also impressive.

For the Bulldogs, Adam Cooney (one goal, 29 disposals), Matthew Boyd (one goal, 37 disposals) and Shaun Higgins (two goals, 23 disposals) all made strong contributions.
