Lions set for multiple AFL All-Australians

Brisbane’s stunning rise to AFL power has them poised for their first multiple AFL All-Australian selections since the glory days of the early 2000s.

Harris Andrews looks a lock for full-back when the 22-man honorary line-up is announced in Melbourne on Wednesday night.

Small forward Charlie Cameron also should make the team along with onballer Lachie Neale, while fellow midfielder Dayne Zorko is a good chance to be named, probably on the bench.

Brisbane have six players in the 40-man squad named on Monday and defender Daniel Rich was stiff not to join them.

West Coast topped the nominations with seven players and Geelong also have six.

In the last decade Brisbane have had only three All-Australian selections – Zorko two years ago, Tom Rockliff in 2014 and Jonathan Brown earned his second spot in 2009.

After finishing 15th last season, the Lions have rocketed to second under Chris Fagan, surely the coach of the year.

This will be just the second finals appearance for the Lions since they lost the 2004 grand final to Port Adelaide, ending their golden era.

Brisbane had five players in the All-Australian team that season and they boasted six in 2002, the middle of their premiership three-peat.

If Geelong veteran Gary Ablett makes the final 22, he will make history as the first player since the league’s carnival era to earn nine All-Australian selections.

Ablett Snr, Mark Ricciuto and Robert Harvey have also made eight All-Australian teams.

As always, the talk since the naming of the 40-man squad has been as much about who missed out, as who was selected.

Richmond defender Nick Vlastuin, North Melbourne defender Robbie Tarrant, Essendon midfielder Zach Merrett and Fremantle speedster Brad Hill join Rich as players unlucky not to make the cut.
