Fremantle coach Ross Lyon says he has smoothed the waters with Colin Young after the disgruntled player agent blasted the AFL club.
Young created a storm earlier this week when he criticised the way Fremantle rehabilitates players who are injured.
One of his clients – Shane Kersten – was reportedly unhappy with the way the club had treated his foot injury, and severed ties with Fremantle on Thursday.
The Dockers have been ravaged by injuries in recent years.
This season Matt Taberner (foot), Alex Pearce (ankle), Jesse Hogan (foot), Aaron Sandilands (calf), Harley Bennell (calf), and Stephen Hill (quad/calf) are among the players who have all been sidelined for long periods.
Young, who manages a huge bulk of Fremantle’s list, said the club would go nowhere if it didn’t address the way it rehabilitates players.
Lyon said he spoke to Young on Thursday to talk things out.
“It was a really good conversation,” he said.
“He just rang to clarify the context of his comments really, because he felt they were taken out of context.
“I said, ‘Mate, that’s not unusual, so relax’.”
Lyon said Young had every right to voice his concerns, but hinted it would be better aired in private rather than through the media.
“I think if you’ve got players at your club, and there’s been some long-term concern, you’re entitled to ask and contact the club,” he said.
“He’s got a very close working relationship, in particular with (chief executive) Steve Rosich, so you’d like the vehicles to remain private.
“But no one is working harder to explore and find solutions than our medical and conditioning team.
“We’ve got really competent people. We’re not the gatekeepers of all knowledge, so we try to source the best treatment in the world.”
Lyon is contracted for 2020, but a big loss to Geelong at Optus Stadium on Saturday would heap even more pressure on his job.
The Dockers (8-10) have lost five of their past six games to slip to 12th on the ladder, and they could be without Rory Lobb (shoulder) for the rest of the season.
Lyon said the club is exploring whether Lobb requires surgery.
The Dockers will also be without defenders Luke Ryan (hamstring) and Nathan Wilson (toe) this week, while veteran Hayden Ballantyne was dropped.
Geelong (14-4) sit a game clear on top of the ladder, and welcome back Gary Rohan and Zach Tuohy.
The Cats rested veteran Harry Taylor, while James Parsons was axed from the team that beat Sydney last week.
