Collingwood star Adam Treloar’s AFL season hangs in the balance with his freakish double-hamstring injury set to sideline him for at least two months.
The gun midfielder will undergo surgery this week, having suffered tendon damage on his left hamstring while also straining his right hamstring during Sunday’s win over Carlton at the MCG.
Treloar is likely to be sidelined until late-August, leaving a glimmer of hope he might play a part in the finals should the fourth-placed Magpies qualify.
The 25-year-old lost his balance and landed awkwardly after being nudged while sprinting along the MCG wing.
Treloar has rarely been injured during his 135-game career but can consider himself deeply unlucky to have hurt himself in such an unsual manner.
“Adam stumbled, his left leg locked and before he tumbled to the ground his left leg stretched beyond its limit,” Magpies football boss Geoff Walsh told the club’s website.
“It seems that he strained his right leg on the way down as he tried to compensate for the force pushing his through his left.
“It is certainly highly unusual, to injure both hamstrings at once. No-one can recall it happening before in football. Still, Adam is a fantastic professional and we have no doubt that he will commit himself to the most thorough recovery possible.
“As to what the immediate future holds, we’ll know more after the surgery and his rehabilitation begins.”
Treloar is one of Collingwood’s most important players and has earned a reputation as a big-game performer.
But Magpies president Eddie McGuire on Monday insisted Treloar’s injury would not be a dagger through their hearts.
“There is a feeling at our club of optimism at the moment and genuine lightness in our step, where it might have been heavy in the past,” he told Fox Footy’s AFL360.
“A day like today would have been a dagger through the heart … you know what? We’re going to reload and we’re going to go again.”
