Mattner named Sydney Swans assistant coach

Premiership defender Marty Mattner will remain at AFL club Sydney as an assistant coach.

Mattner retired after round seven of the 2013 season due to a debilitating hip condition.

Swans general manager of football Dean Moore suggested the 31-year-old, who played 222 AFL matches including the 2012 grand final, would be a natural fit in the coach’s box.

“After Marty retired early in the season, he worked closely with the club’s young players in the reserves, which was a role he performed with great success,” Moore said in a statement

“Marty is a great teacher of the game and he knows what it takes to succeed at the highest level.

“On the field, Marty was an absolute professional and team player, he performed the one-percenters well all the time, and it’s these qualities that make him a great addition to our coaching department.”

Assistant coaches Leigh Tudor and George Stone left the club after the 2013 campaign, to join North Melbourne and Melbourne respectively.
