Melbourne Demons vs Richmond Tigers Preview

The traditional ANZAC eve clash is one of the great spectacles on the AFL calendar each year with another huge crowd expected on Monday night.

The Dees still sit towards the top of the Premiership market, but questions are being asked on the back of another confusing loss to Essendon last week.

For the most part, Simon Goodwin’s side resembled the same team we saw in the second half of last season, plagued by slow ball movement and some serious defensive issues down back.

The Dees allowed the Bombers to take 15 marks inside 50, a worrying sign for a club that boasts one of the best defensive lists in the competition.

The return of the game’s best intercept marker, Jake Lever, should go a long way to improving things this week, but Melbourne needs to spend a good amount of time watching film after allowing guys like Sam Draper to take uncontested marks in the forward half.

Likewise, Richmond will also spend the leadup reflecting on a poor performance against the Swans.

The Tigers were up and about in the first half, but some ill discipline and a basic lack of options inside 50 cost them in the end.

Silly 50m penalties highlighted Richmond’s struggles to start the year, while Trent Cotchin being subbed also came as a shock.

Looking back, Melbourne has won the last two ANZAC Eve clashes, while it’s also worth noting the Dees’ 6-3 record on the back of a loss.

Statistically, Melbourne still remains the top scoring side in the competition, which doesn’t bode well for a Tigers outfit that ranks 15th in the same category.

The Dees have had a couple of rough performances against the Lions and Dons so far, but they’re worth a mulligan after an uncharacteristic performance that wasn’t anything close to their usual slick brand of footy.
