Melbourne Demons vs Sydney Swans Preview
Most had these two clubs earmarked as genuine flag contenders this year, and although it’s early, we should learn plenty about their credentials on Sunday evening.
Melbourne was blown off the park against the Lions for three-quarters last week, but there was a lot to like about the way Simon Goodwin’s men handled business following the blackout at the Gabba.
Clayton Oliver had his hands all over the footy, and Bayley Fritsch looked as dangerous as ever up forward snagging three goals on return.
The loss was only dampened though with star ruckman Max Gawn suffering a knee injury that is set to rule him out for several weeks – a big blow for a team that was smashed around the clearances against Brisbane.
The Swans, on the other hand, are flying high following a pair of comfortable wins over the Suns and Hawks, but this is a much tougher test against their first genuine finals contender.
Up forward, the future looks very bright with Logan McDonald throwing his name in the ring, while Joel Amartey continues to blossom in his third year with the club.
The Swans playing at the MCG is always a risky bet, but you can’t knock how polished and composed they’ve looked since the Grand Final belting last year.
Sydney ranks top five in points, tackles, inside 50s, and disposals so far, while defensively, they’ve been one of the hardest teams to score against.
The fact they won the Qualifying Final last year over Melbourne at the ‘G only inspires further confidence, especially with the Dees set to receive a boost in the form of Steven May.
There’s a real case to be made for either team here, but with the Dees showing some real turnover issues last week and a handful of quiet patches on the scoreboard, I think the Swans are the value.
