New group wants Lions board overthrown

A former Fitzroy director has headed a new Brisbane Lions supporter group calling for all the club’s warring board members to be thrown out.

Dr Henry Pinskier, speaking for Restore The Lions’ Pride (RTLP), has threatened a populist uprising if an immediate resolution doesn’t end in-fighting at board level since coach Michael Voss was sacked two months ago.

The group isn’t taking sides in the stoush between chairman Angus Johnson’s board and the rival ticket, headed by rebel directors Paul Williams and Mick Power, but says all should be punished for their “self-seeking” behaviour.

In a move which could further muddy the murky waters at the Lions, they have emailed members, supporters and ex-players calling for expressions of interest to run for board positions.

Melbourne businessman Pinskier, who served on the Fitzroy board from 1991-93, said it was time for a clean slate at the club and called for current directors to resign.

“What we’ve got is a board at war,” he told AAP on Monday. “We’re not backing anyone, we’re backing the Brisbane Lions.

“What we’ve got at the moment is a lot of self-interested people wanting to fight and argue.

“Both factions of this board feud are to blame and Power and Williams are no different from the rest.

“If they can’t resolve their own issues effectively then they should all be thrown out.

“We hope we’ll incite a bandwagon around these issues that will (a better, united board).”

The only person involved in the current board fight which RTLP have endorsed is Leigh Matthews who has been blocked from running on the Williams-Power ticket by the board’s legal advice.

Matthews won’t back down and has responded with a series of attacks on Johnson and the board, while also pointing to the AFL’s influence on the situation.

“Unfortunately Lions members no longer control their own club,” Brisbane’s triple-premiership-winning former coach tweeted on Sunday.

“Club not financially self sufficient so all decisions now orchestrated by AFL.”

The AFL Commission was meeting on Monday where a proposed grant of $1.2 million was expected to be handed down to help boost the cash-strapped Lions’ finances.

The rise of Restore The Lions Pride came as a surprise to the club’s official supporter’s group – The Lions Roar – who cautioned against a populist overthrow.

“We’re absolutely keen for members to have their say but we urge caution because this is a complex situation,” said James Kliemt. “It’s all at a delicate stage.”

Pinskier says more of the clubs’ budget – 80 per cent – needs to be spent on the football department and less on administration.

He also called for a return of traditional “triple-premiership” Lion logo on Brisbane’s guernsey, replacing the new “Paddle Pop Lion”.
