A statue of women’s AFL star Tayla Harris’ famous airborne kick has landed a new home in Melbourne just weeks after the public got its first look.

The towering 3.3-metre monument thrilled crowds at the city’s Federation Square, where visitors lined up for photos following its September 11 unveiling.

The figure was just a prototype for the real statue which remains under construction in NSW by sculptor Terrance Plowright . It’s due to be finished next year and weigh more than a tonne.

The prototype has been moved to the Docklands headquarters of sponsor NAB.

Harris is expected to be involved in deciding where the real statue will be placed.

A photograph of the kick became a viral sensation earlier this year after sparking a spirited defence of women in sport when Harris was targeted by online trolls.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re a man or a woman, young or old – everyone has a right to do what they love,” Harris said when the statue was unveiled.

“That’s what I want people to see when they look at this.”
