Port can move a step closer to sewing up a home final on Saturday with a win over the visiting Hawks.
The Power prevailed in a 10-point arm wrestle with a strong final term, Ken Hinkley’s midfield again proving the difference with Zak Butters racking up 32 touches on the day.
Hawthorn also ran out 10-point victors in what was arguably the biggest upset of the round.
Late goals from Luke Breust and Jacob Koschitzke saw the Hawks finish over the top of St Kilda, James Sicily leading the charge with 43 disposals and 16 marks to his name.
The chances of Hawthorn making it three in a row appear slim, but after upsetting Port in Round 2 last year, Ken Hinkley will be stressing the importance of not underestimating the bottom-dwellers.
Mitch Lewis’ inclusion has sparked new life into the Hawks’ forward line, and although young, the Hawthorn midfield has a feisty edge to it that indicates real promise for the future.
That said, there mightn’t be a better midfield in the competition right now than Port Adelaide’s, Butters, Ollie Wines, and Connor Rozee all complimenting each other perfectly.
Aside from big wins over North Melbourne and West Coast this season, the Power aren’t winning by huge margins, so the line could be a risky investment.
The Power have also struggled to find accuracy in front of goal this year, while Hawthorn has been prone to patchy periods of footy that feature massive scoring droughts.
If those trends hold, Port winning in a low-scoring fashion appears likely.
