Ratten flags bold AFL list strategy

Newly appointed St Kilda coach Brett Ratten has flagged a bold list strategy moving forward.

The Saints haven’t made finals since 2011 but have been heavily linked to Fremantle winger Brad Hill, with Ratten keen to attract fresh talent to Moorabbin.

“I think like all lists there needs to be change and what we need to do is bring talent into our football club,” Ratten told reporters on Friday.

“And if there’s players there that would like to come to the St Kilda Football Club and are talented, we want them to come.

“So that will be the big thing that we look at: who can we get and how do we get them? That will be the next question.”

Ratten said the Saints needed to change their approach to become more aggressive both on and off the field.

“Well we can’t do the same thing as we did last year, can we?” he said.

“With our program, with the way we played. We need change. If it didn’t work, we need to adjust.

“Now I’m not saying the boldness is going to be reckless … but it might just be subtle shifts in certain areas that give us an opportunity to be aggressive.”

Midfielder Jack Steven has been consistently linked to a move to Geelong and played just seven games this year as he dealt with mental health issues.

Ratten said he was yet to catch up with Steven but his priority was ensuring the 29-year-old was happy and healthy.

“I want Jack to be happy,” he said.

“That’s the main thing about his own personal health and making sure that he is happy but those decisions will be made down the track but that’s the first and foremost – a happy Jack Steven and healthy and then what will happen from there we’re not sure.

“But that’s the thing that I would like as a coach, to make sure that he’s in a really good space.”

Defender Jake Carlisle’s future at Moorabbin had appeared unclear while key forward Josh Bruce has been linked to a move to the Western Bulldogs.

But Ratten said as things stood he saw both players at St Kilda next year.
