‘Roos pick Goldstein for Pies AFL clash

North Melbourne will go with Todd Goldstein as their No.1 ruckman for the round-one AFL clash this Sunday against Collingwood.

The Kangaroos experimented through the NAB Cup with Goldstein and recruit Daniel Currie.

There has been plenty of speculation about the duo, with coach Brad Scott making it clear that only one of them is likely to play at a time.

Currie did not make the squad for Sunday’s match and potential back-up ruckman Majak Daw will make his debut if he is named on Friday in the final 22.

“You never like fighting for one position, but it makes us both better,” Goldstein said of his battle for the Kangaroos’ No.1 ruck spot with Currie.

“I think we can really learn off each other, push each other, and hopefully that makes us both better players which is going to help the side in general.

“The competition can’t hurt. You always like to know you’re in the side, but it does also drive you to work harder and get better, which only can help me.”

Goldstein has played 79 games for the ‘Roos since his 2008 debut, while Currie gained a second chance at the AFL when North picked him last November in the national draft.

He played several pre-season games for Sydney before being delisted.

Currie then had a standout season last year for North Adelaide in the SANFL.

There is considerable excitement around the AFL about Daw, a high-flying tall utility who is on the verge of becoming the first Sudanese player in the league.
