Selwood’s AFL return for Cats on hold

Joel Selwood’s bid to return to Geelong’s AFL side has stalled, with the skipper named as an emergency for Sunday’s clash with North Melbourne.

A sore Selwood missed last week’s win over Essendon but it was assumed he was ready to resume when named in the Cats’ extended 26-man squad on Thursday.

However, Zach Tuohy was the only inclusion when the final 22 was released on Friday, the Irishman coming in for Zach Guthrie.

Darcy Fort, James Parsons and Charlie Constable are the other emergencies, with doubt still surrounding Patrick Dangerfield, who is nursing a sore knee.

The Kangaroos stuck with the same 22 that defeated Carlton for the Marvel Stadium encounter.

Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson didn’t stop at dropping former skipper Jarryd Roughead for Sunday’s match-up with GWS at the MCG, with Kaiden Brand and Daniel Howe joining the injured Chad Wingard in departing the side beaten by Melbourne.

James Frawley is back from a hamstring injury suffered in round four, with Jonathon Ceglar, James Cousins and Jack Scrimshaw included.

The Giants lost Shane Mumford and Aidan Corr to injury but regained co-captain Phil Davis and star midfielder Josh Kelly, with Dawson Simpson and Zac Langdon earning recalls.

David Astbury and Ryan Garthwaite are in for Richmond’s clash with Fremantle at Optus Stadium, replacing injured duo Daniel Rioli and Nick Vlastuin.

Former Giant Cam McCarthy was dropped for the Dockers, who brought in Brennan Cox.
