Heath Shaw’s manager is adamant the temperamental Collingwood defender wants to stay at the club as speculation rages about his AFL future.
Shaw’s flare-up with opponent Angus Monfries during the elimination final loss to Port Adelaide last Saturday night has put the Magpie under the spotlight again.
Collingwood have already delisted six players, including premiership stars Darren Jolly and Alan Didak, and there is talk that they might try to engineer a trade for Shaw.
“He’s contracted for two years, he’s a Collingwood person, his family are Collingwood, he loves the football club,” his manager Ben Niall told Channel Nine’s The Footy Show.
“He has relationships that are broad and deep in that place and he loves playing for his footy club.
“I don’t think any manager of any player could guarantee his player is going to be at a footy club, that would be pretty naive.
“But also we are contracted and we’re just going through genuinely a normal review of a club that has underperformed.”
Niall acknowledged that Shaw has brought much of the speculation on himself.
He added Shaw was trying hard to stop his on-field blow ups.
“Heath’s personality and profile mean he can be a bit of a lightning rod for dissent and dissatisfaction,” Niall said.
“Maybe sometimes he brings some of that on himself.
“But he’s passionate about the team’s success.
“There are times in games and during the year where he struggles to control his emotions and can lack a bit of discipline.
“No-one is more aware of that than Heath and Heath is certainly working on those aspects of his on-field demeanour – it’s a work in progress.”
