Contracted GWS midfielder Dylan Shiel has nominated Essendon as his preferred new AFL club.
Carlton, Hawthorn and St Kilda were also chasing the 2017 All-Australian, who has one year remaining on his Giants contract.
The Bombers’ first-round draft pick of No.9 is almost certain to be part of any deal, although GWS would likely seek further compensation for the highly-rated Shiel.
The Giants said the 25-year-old had told them of his wish to move to Essendon.
“Dylan has been a big part of this club for a number of years and we have been having mature and honest conversations, particularly considering he will enter free agency at the end of next year,” GWS said in a statement.
“The Giants are prepared to discuss potential trade options with the Bombers that sees an appropriate return for the club.”
If a suitable trade can be arranged, Shiel will again join forces with Devon Smith, who won Essendon’s 2018 best and fairest award in his first year after leaving the Giants.
