St Kilda Saints vs Essendon Bombers Preview

A win over the Bombers will be the icing on the cake as the Saints celebrate their 150th anniversary on Saturday night.

Despite a mile-long injury list, St Kilda has defied the bookies with back-to-back wins over the Dockers and Bulldogs, while the Bombers have been equally impressive knocking off Hawthorn and the Gold Coast in succession.

The injury woes have only deepened for the Saints with superstar skipper Jack Steele set to miss a month with a broken collarbone – a huge blow given how quality the Essendon midfield has looked through two games so far.

The Bombers hype train is certainly gaining momentum, especially on the back of last week’s rousing fourth quarter against the Suns.

Statistically, the game was quite even, but the Bombers made the most of their momentum late in the game with some heroics from Kyle Langford also setting the tone.

The Saints have proven a feisty and gritty opponent thus far, but they’ve failed to match Essendon in their last two meetings losing by 30+ points on both occasions.

Sooner or later the injuries have to catch up, and I’m just not sure they have the bodies to match the likes of Zach Merrett, Andy McGrath, and Dylan Shiel through the midfield.

With the Dons also facing a tough upcoming stretch against Melbourne, Collingwood, Geelong, and Port Adelaide over the next month, I think they’ll sense the importance of this game and a potential 3-0 start.
