Suns beat Swans to move into AFL top eight

Gold Coast have surged back into the AFL top eight with a 32-point victory over Sydney at the SCG.

The Suns scored the first 13 points on Saturday evening and never trailed, winning 13.14 (92) to 9.6 (60).

Their first win in three games was more good news for coach Stuart Dew who signed a contract extension earlier in the week.

The victory moves the emerging Queensland club up five places provisionally to fifth.

It is a fourth-straight loss for the Swans who remain second last on the ladder.

First-season Suns’ forward Izak Rankine followed up a three-goal haul on debut, by adding two more eye-catching efforts at the SCG.

The first goal came when he kicked off the the ground through a pack of players for the opening major of the game and he added a 45-metre snap in the third quarter.

Lachie Weller and Sam Day also kicked two goals for the visitors who won the clearances and hit-outs comfortably.

Gold Coast booted the first four goals of the second quarter to blow out a two-point advantage at the first change to 28.

Sydney showed some fight, slamming on the last three goals of the quarter to trail by 10 at halftime.

Gold Coast led by 16 points at the last change and pulled further away, with Nick Holman marking his 50th appearance by kicking the last goal and becoming the 10th Sun in the match to register a major.

They were sparked by Hugh Greenwood, who logged 23 touches, 18 contested possessions, 12 tackles and nine clearances.

Swan Tom Papley, who entered the round leading the Coleman Medal, kicked two more to swell his tally to 15, and Will Hayward also booted a couple.

Swans coach John Longmire surprised by playing the recalled Aliir Aliir as a key forward and he rewarded the strategy by kicking two first-half goals.
