Greater Western Sydney say Sydney premiership ruckman Shane Mumford has accepted an offer to join the Swans’ cross-city AFL rivals.
The Giants posted a statement on their website saying Mumford will be with the club for the next three years.
“The Giants will now work to facilitate a trade for the out-of-contract ruckman when the AFL trade period starts next week or secure him through the AFL pre-season draft,” the statement said.
Hawthorn were also chasing 27-year-old Mumford, who the Swans could not accommodate in their salary cap due to the million-dollar deal for Lance Franklin.
However, the Giants have a prized bargain chip in the form of the No.1 pick in the pre-season draft and Mumford has settled on moving to the expansion franchise.
“The Giants are an exciting club with a great future and I couldn’t be happier to be moving across Sydney to join them,” Mumford said.
“They have a talented young midfield and it’s a great opportunity to help them go to the next level and achieve on-field success.”
There were fears GWS would fail to attract top-line mature-age talent like Mumford, having been knocked back by Franklin and Essendon ruckman Tom Bellchambers.
“This shows that high calibre players are prepared to join our club,” Cameron said.
“We said we needed to target an experienced ruckman and with the addition of Shane we have landed a quality player.
“As our No.1 ruckman he will take some of the pressure off Jonathan Giles while we continue to develop Andrew Phillips and Tom Downie, and gives us depth in our ruck stocks.”
