Lance Franklin is fired up for another AFL clash with former side Hawthorn but Sydney’s forward line is ready to show they’re no one-man band.
Franklin’s first half of the season was marred by groin and hamstring injuries.
The superstar returned to his best prior to the bye, booting five goals to help the Swans upset reigning premiers West Coast, and will take centre stage at the SCG on Friday night.
Franklin looms as the most concerning threat for the visitors’ defence that has been weakened by the absence of suspended skipper Ben Stratton.
However, Franklin’s fellow forwards Tom Papley and Sam Reid have played key roles in the Swans’ recent resurgence.
Franklin, Reid and Papley combined for 13 goals in a winning score of 18.8 (116) against the Eagles.
The trio will be joined on Friday night by returning young gun Will Hayward, who has recovered from the calf injury that forced him to miss the Swans’ most productive match at home since 2017.
“If you look at the goal and goal assist stats, it’s clear there are different avenues to goal other than Bud,” Hayward said.
“Paps popped up with five last week, Menz (Daniel Menzel) has been causing headaches.
“Sam Reid has been playing really good footy, he’s in great form … James Rose came in last week and palyed good footy.
“It’s really good to have a dynamic forward line.”
Franklin, who won two flags with the Hawks before joining the Swans for the 2014 season, is set for an eventful eight days.
The four-time Coleman medallist will play his 300th game at the SCG in round 15, when the Swans host Gold Coast, while it’s no secret that Friday night will carry extra significance for the veteran because of the opposition.
“I always love playing alongside him, especially when we’re up against his old side,” Reid said on Big Sports Breakfast.
“He’s one of the most competitive players I’ve played with … he’s up and about this week.”
Hayward acknowledged Stratton’s enforced omission was a bonus for the Swans but noted it wouldn’t change their mindset on Friday night.
The 20-year-old, who also missed three games earlier this season because of a broken jaw, admitted it’s been a frustrating season for him.
“Injuries are going to happen again throughout my career. It’s just about how you overcome them,” Hayward said.
