Sydney Swans vs GWS Giants Odds

Sydney Swans vs GWS Giants Preview

It feels like most years we’re seeing these two sides battle it out in the Finals Series and just our luck we’ve got it again.

History plays a unique tipping point in this game, as the Giants are 3-0 in Finals against the Swans, with wins in 2016, 2018, and 2021.

However, the Swans beat the Giants on both occasions this season, with a win at the SCG by 29 points, and a win at ENGIE Stadium by 27 points, so the Giants haven’t gotten close.

Sydney’s form has slightly improved heading into Finals, but there is still a shadow of doubt given they had a light draw to finish this year, with their last game against a top eight side coming against the Power, which was a 112-point loss.

GWS themselves have been performing at a lower standard than usual, but efficiency has got the job done for them with big wins against the Lions, Dockers, and Hawks.

The Giants inside 50 efficiency has been no higher than 43% in both meetings this season against the Swans, and on both occasions, they lost the stoppage battle.

Sydney’s biggest threat in the finals but also to the Giants on this occasion is their capacity to score through their midfielders, which troubled the Giants in both meetings this season.

Errol Gulden led the way with disposals in both games and it was the Swans imposing ability in transition that overwhelmed the Giants defensively.

Where the Giants have the upper hand is their ability to space the forward line open and create marking opportunities, where they sit third in the competition for average marks inside 50 per game.

Having a Coleman Medallist on the team helps your case significantly, although Jesse Hogan hasn’t kicked more than two goals in either meeting, two and one.

The Swans will be hoping for a return of Tom Papley who will add some extra goal flare the Swans have lacked in the past few weeks and just a natural tone setter at that.

Likewise, the Giants will be hoping for the return of Jake Riccardi, who adds an extra athletic element inside 50.

Pound for pound it’s an extremely even contest, but the Giants have been relying too much on capitalising inside 50 and simply don’t dominate games for long enough.

While their finals record against the Swans is impressive, they will need to come out a lot more aggressive to come home with the win.

Sydney’s offensive flare at the SCG is hard to stop, and if they get off to a fast start, they could put their foot down quite quickly, but all hope is for a tight encounter!
