Sydney Swans vs Port Adelaide Preview
Port Adelaide enters this Preliminary Final with an intriguing mix of optimism and historical challenges. They became the 12th team to lose a Qualifying Final by 50+ points and rebound with a Semi-Final win the following week. However, none of the previous 11 teams managed to win their subsequent Preliminary Final.
A key advantage for the Power is their dominant recent history against the Swans. Port Adelaide demolished Sydney by 112 points just six weeks ago and has not lost at the SCG since 2016, winning the last three games at the venue. They’ve also claimed eight straight victories against the Swans, a fact largely overlooked.
However, Sydney’s current form can’t be ignored. The Swans have gone unbeaten since that heavy defeat, winning four games by an average of 20 points. Their high-risk, high-reward style thrives on capitalising off turnovers, while Port’s challenge will be replicating the pressure they applied against Hawthorn to restrict Sydney’s attacking threats.
Port Adelaide’s midfield versatility was key in their previous win over Sydney, but the Swans’ elite endurance runners, like Chad Warner and Jake Lloyd, could pose a real challenge, especially with the Power worn out from two gruelling finals.
While Port’s statistical dominance suggests they could win, the weight of history—and playing at the SCG—could prove to be their biggest hurdle.
