Tigers inspired by Higgins’ AFL comeback

Richmond dual premiership player Kane Lambert says young forward Jack Higgins has learned who his close friends are following his health woes in 2019.

The 20-year-old is back training with the Tigers after twice undergoing surgery last year following a brain bleed that originally sidelined him from any form of football in July.

Lambert says there’s no doubt the ordeal has been a life-changing experience for his young AFL teammate.

“He’s a kid who had the world at his feet and just unfortunately had a brain injury that was no fault of his own and his world flips around,” Lambert said.

“That’s great perspective.

“He’s learned a lot from the experience and he’s learnt who his close mates are, where his supports are and he’s got a long road ahead but we’re all here behind him.”

No date has been set for Higgins’ playing return, though it is hoped he’ll be back on the field in 2020.

The small forward has been taking part in contact sessions during the Tigers’ pre-season camp on the Gold Coast this week, donning black headgear.

Lambert said Higgins’ return had been a highlight of the premiers’ 2020 preparations.

“It’s great to have Higgo back just around the group,” Lambert said.

“He’s integrated back into some contact training as well.

“He’s a great vibrant character and brings a lot of energy.”

Lambert feels the Tigers are in great shape heading into the season, with their only major absentee at the moment being ruckman Toby Nankervis who is recovering from off-season groin surgery.

“The list is pretty good. I think Toby is not too far away from joining the main group, which is a great sign and hopefully it stays that way,” Lambert said.
