Top Crow wants Betts to snub AFL rivals

Adelaide co-captain Taylor Walker wants his revered teammate Eddie Betts to ignore overtures from rival AFL clubs.

Gold Coast are understood to be among a handful of clubs circling Betts, who is contracted by Adelaide until the end of next season.

A batch of rival clubs contacted Betts’s manager when the popular goalsneak, who turns 33 in November, was dropped from Adelaide’s side three weeks ago.

Betts has since returned to the Crows line-up but Adelaide could be entering a period of rejuvenating one of the oldest playing lists in the competition.

The Suns are believed to want to lure Betts for a playing and mentoring role, similar to that of ex-Hawthorn great Luke Hodge at Brisbane.

But Walker hopes the brilliant forward fulfils his Adelaide deal.

“He still has a year on his contract,” Walker told Triple M radio on Tuesday.

“It’s up to Eddie and our club.

“I would imagine that he is at our club next year … personally, I would love to keep him as long as we can so I would be very surprised if he went.”

Walker said he would seek out Betts but won’t directly ask about his future.

“I will ask him if he is OK .. but I’m not going to say ‘has someone offered you a contract’; I think it’s very rude to ask that question.”

Betts has played 129 AFL games for the Crows since leaving Carlton – where he played 184 games – at the end of the 2013 season.

Ninth-placed Adelaide could embark on a mission to revive an ageing list with the futures of 31-year-old ruckman Sam Jacobs, 32-year-old midfielder Richard Douglas and 31-year-old utility David Mackay uncertain.

Key forward Josh Jenkins, a 30-year-old contracted until the end of the 2021 season, could also attract interest from rivals after twice being dumped from the Crows side this season.

Adelaide’s negotiations of fresh contracts for defenders Alex Keath, Jake Kelly and onballer Hugh Greenwood are also in limbo.
