Vic AFL finals gets extra security, police

Extra police will be on patrol during Victoria’s footy finals with security measures for the MCG stepped up.

Fans will see additional officers deployed around the iconic ground, at public transport hubs and in Melbourne’s CBD from Friday.

“There’s no direct threat to any of our events or the AFL finals series, we’re just providing the appropriate level of safety and security for the public,” Victoria Police acting commander David Clayton said.

He said anyone entering or leaving the city would be likely to notice the “around-the-clock” presence.

Mandatory bag searches and wand checks would also be in place at the MCG for the finals, Melbourne Cricket Club venue and events general services manager Gerard Griffin said.

Patrons were urged to get to the ground early before games and were advised to take public transport, he said.
