West Coast Eagles vs Carlton Blues Preview
A game against struggling West Coast couldn’t have come at a better time for Carlton coach Michael Voss.
After losing to a genuine finals contender in the Adelaide Crows two weeks ago, the Blues failed to pass another serious footy test last week in a 22-point loss to St Kilda.
Voss has been left with more questions than answers over the last fortnight, but it doesn’t take a genius to work out what’s going wrong at Carlton.
Getting the ball inside 50 to their two key weapons, Harry McKay and Charlie Curnow, has proven more difficult than it should. The Blues were slow and outworked against the defensive-minded Saints last week, evident in the fact they took only nine marks from 52 inside 50 entries.
That style of play won’t see Carlton play finals, but fortunately, Voss can rectify some of those issues this week against a West Coast side destined to finish bottom two.
With injuries still piling up, the Eagles were on the receiving end of another 40-point loss against Port Adelaide last Saturday. Returning home from a two-week stint in South Australia should help, but this is still an enormous test with the hot seat only growing warmer beneath Adam Simpson.
The Eagles currently lead the league in inside 50 entries to opponents, and as the line suggests, this one could get out of hand in a hurry.
