You can’t read too much into one game, but the fight these two clubs put up in the opening round suggests they won’t be the easy beats of the competition this year.

After trailing early, West Coast came roaring home to finish within a goal of North Melbourne, while the Giants turned the tables on the Crows in the second half to erase a five-goal deficit.

GWS’ long list of outs made the win even more impressive, not to mention the 35 degree heat they had to battle in Sydney.

For West Coast, Adam Simpson will be asking questions of his senior plays after a slow start, but there were still strong signs of life after a forgettable 2022 campaign.
