Paul Gallen vs Lucas Browne Preview
Paul Gallen’s unbeaten pro record goes on the line against his best-credentialled opponent to date, Australia’s self-professed heavyweight G.O.A.T. Lucas Browne.
Rugby league great Gallen has been dismissed in some quarters for fighting fellow ex-footballers and boxers of questionable quality. He slugged out a majority draw against AFL hardman Barry Hall in November 2019.
The 39-year-old silenced some critics in December with a unanimous decision win over UFC icon Mark Hunt. Gallen was the $2.60 underdog (after opening at $4.25), impressively withstanding some big early shots from powerhouse Hunt and ultimately outboxing his less fit opponent.
But it is worth noting Hunt was 46 years of age, had not had a boxing bout in 20 years and was two years removed from his last MMA appearance.
Nevertheless, Gallen’s punching power and sound defence has attracted praise from boxing pundits.
Gallen out to prove ring chops once and for all against ‘Big Daddy’
The 42-year-old Browne marks another step up in class and reputation for Gallen, however. Browne won his first 25 professional fights, holding the Australian, WBF and WBA heavyweight titles (among others) during his 2009-17 unbeaten run.
‘Big Daddy’ has suffered knockout losses to Dillian Whyte (March 2018) and David Allen (April 2019) since. Browne won his most recent bout – against John Hopoate, who Gallen also has a victory against – by second-round TKO in November 2019.
Twenty-five of Browne’s 29 victories have come by way of knockout.
The build-up to the fight has been brimming with trash-talk and vitriol, as is typical of Gallen’s bouts. The 196cm Browne has a significant height and reach advantage over the 180cm Gallen. There’s no question $2.50 underdog Gallen knows the scale of the task in front of him…though there is a danger of Browne underestimating his less-experienced opponent.
Despite Browne’s record, it would be somewhat surprising to see the bout decided by knockout. Gallen has proven he can take a punch, as well as defend himself. But Browne’s vast experience against quality fighters should be the decisive factor on Wednesday night.
Market Update: Lucas Browne continues to firm in betting with bookmakers struggling to take bets on Paul Gallen. The former NRL star has caused upsets in the past though, can he produce another surprise result?
