Aust women in dark over Pakistan bowlers

Australia have begun their Women’s World Twenty20 title defence with a win over India but they’ll be flying blind in their second group encounter against Pakistan in Galle on Saturday.

Southern Stars Coach Cathryn Fitzpatrick admits the team have very little working knowledge of Pakistan’s bowling attack, which conceded a total of 6-133 against England on Thursday before England bowled their Group A rivals out for 90.

Legspinner Sana Mir, who has an excellent T20 International record of 28 wickets at 13 in 24 matches, led Pakistan’s bowling against England with 2-20 from four overs.

But Australia have plenty of hitting power with their top order of Meg Lanning, Alyssa Healy and Jess Cameron scoring 39, 21 and 36 respectively in Thursday’s eight-wicket win over India.

Fitzpatrick said the win was a pleasing performance despite some early nerves in the field.

“After a few little fumbles they got back on track,” Fitzpatrick said on Friday.

“It was a fairly clinical performance.”

She admitted Australia would take some pointers from how England tackled Pakistan when they face them on Saturday (1400 AEST).

“They (Pakistan) bowled about seven bowlers (on Thursday) so we had a pretty good look at them,” Fitzpatrick said.

“We don’t know a lot about them but we certainly watched how England played against them and we can direct our batters into what we think are going to be some effective plans against their bowlers.”

Meanwhile, New Zealand bounced back from a first-up defeat to beat South Africa by 22 runs.

Allrounder Sophie Devine produced a decisive innings of 59 off 46 balls as the White Ferns reached 151-5 at the Galle International Stadium on Friday. She then chimed in with two wickets as the South Africans reached 129-9 off their 20 overs.

Following their seven-wicket loss to the West Indies on Wednesday, the victory leaves New Zealand in a strong position to qualify for the semi-finals if they win their final pool match against lowly-rated Sri Lanka in Galle on Sunday.
