The tourists lost two wickets in two balls from Ben Stokes immediately after a 29-minute rain delay with Aaron Finch falling for 26 and Matthew Wade caught behind first ball trying to hook a bouncer.
Michael Clarke, passed fit to play after a recurrence of his back trouble, survived the hat-trick ball as Australia attempted to rebuild their innings.
With series level at 1-1 the recalled Phillip Hughes was out for just two after lobbing debutant Chris Jordan to mid-wicket but Aaron Finch was 26 not out off 31 balls with Shane Watson 11 not out.
Finch, on the ground where he made 156 in a Twenty20 international last month, smashed two of Jordan’s first six balls to the cover boundary.
Hughes was in for the injured Shaun Marsh whilst spinner Fawed Ahmed was recalled in place of Nathan Coulter-Nile.
England gave an international debut to fast bowler Chris Jordan with the Sussex man coming in for Steven Finn who has a side strain. Jonathan Trott was also a late withdrawal with a back spasm with his spot going to Luke Wright.
England levelled the series with their three wicket win in Cardiff on Saturday, after Australia’s victory in Manchester. Games in Leeds and Birmingham were washed out by rain.
The day-night match will decide the series with Australia hoping to end their trip with a flourish after losing the Ashes series 3-0.
