Australia eye off T20 and Test rankings

After reclaiming the No.1 ranking in the one-day arena, Australia know they have plenty of work to do if they are to achieve the same outcome in the Test and Twenty20 formats.

India lost their grip on the ODI top spot after suffering back-to-back losses to New Zealand.

Australia’s 3-0 lead in their current series against England was enough to see them surge ahead of India, with South Africa occupying third spot.

However, India will reclaim top spot if Australia lose to England in Friday’s one-day clash at the WACA Ground.

Australia’s good form in the 50-over format hasn’t translated into T20 success, with the proud cricketing nation currently sitting eighth in that format, just one spot above Ireland.

Darren Lehmann’s men will jump to sixth if they beat England 3-0 during the upcoming T20 series.

In regards to the coveted Test rankings, Australia’s 5-0 Ashes whitewash lifted them to third.

But their bid for the No.1 spot will be put to the ultimate test next month when they take on the table-topping Proteas in a three-Test series in South Africa.

Even if Australia win that 3-0, it won’t be enough to leapfrog South Africa, but it would significantly close the gap.

“Our aim as a team is to be No.1 in the world in all three forms,” Australian batsman Steve Smith said.

“Hopefully we can carry on in the other two formats to keep improving there as well.”

Australia will be aiming to stretch their winning streak against England to 10 when the teams face off at the WACA on Friday.

India trail 2-0 in their five-match series against the Black Caps.
