Australia vs England Preview
Australia and England have both started the T20 World Cup with a pair of solid victories. The winner of this blockbuster in Dubai is in the box-seat to top Group 1.
Australia’s bowlers did a superb job to restrict South Africa to just 9/118 on Saturday. Josh Hazlewood (2/19), Pat Cummins (1/17) and Adam Zampa were especially impressive. After a shaky start, the Aussies reached the target with five wickets and two balls to spare. They were at a 3/38 crossroads in the eighth over when Steve Smith (35 off 34) and Glenn Maxwell (18 off 21) produced a steadying partnership. The big-name pair departed in the space of three balls, but Marcus Stoinis (24* off 16) and Matthew Wade (15* off 10) steered the side home with an unbeaten 40-run stand.
Their seven-wicket win with 18 balls remaining against Sri Lanka on Thursday was more convincing from a batting perspective – and the form resurgence of a couple of veterans gave their title hopes a significant boost.
Adam Zampa (2/12), Mitchell Starc (2/27) and Pat Cummins (2/34) did the damage with the ball as Sri Lanka made 6/154. Out-of-form openers David Warner (65 off 42) and Aaron Finch (37 off 23) got Australia’s chase off to a flyer. Smith (28* off 26) and Stoinis (16* off 7) finished the job.
The first week of No.1-ranked England’s campaign has gone off without a hitch. They cruised to a six-wicket win with 70 balls to spare after bowling West Indies out for just 55. Adil Rashid (4/2), Moeen Ali (2/17) and Tymal Mills (2/17) were the chief destroyers.
England cruised to an eight-wicket victory over Bangladesh with 35 balls left on Wednesday. Mills (3/27), Ali (2/18) and Liam Livingstone (2/15) were superb as they restricted their opponents to 9/124. Jason Roy (61 off 38) led the run-chase, with Dawid Malan (28* off 25) also chipping in.
The archrivals last met in T20I cricket in the Old Dart last year. England claimed a 2-1 series win. Jos Buttler was Player of the Series with 121 runs, while Malan, Jonny Bairstow and David Warner also made half-centuries.
Australia are building nicely and the top-order performance against Sri Lanka was seriously encouraging. But their $2.27 underdog price here is a reflection of the explosive all-round ability laced throughout England’s line-up.
If Australia is to spring an upset and go 3-0, Warner needs to get them off to another sizzling start. The veteran tends to string big knocks together and shapes as a sound option to top-score.
