England captain Eoin Morgan believes his side is well-placed to buck a trend of Ashes winners suffering hangovers in the one-day format.
The hosts will have to defy recent history in the five-match ODI battle against Australia, due to start in Leeds on Friday, with the past three Ashes winners failing to taste success in the ensuing limited overs series.
Australia were comfortable post-Test series winners in 2009 and 2010/11, while in 2006/7 a Paul Collingwood-inspired England stole victory in the tri-series in Australia that followed an Ashes loss.
With a fresh-looking squad missing rested big guns Alastair Cook, Ian Bell, James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann, Morgan feels there’s no danger of a comedown.
“We’ve talked about it in previous series before and this series is no different. We need to turn up,” Morgan said.
“I think within this squad there’s a great energy and I think within the two teams it’s pretty similar with the changes after the Ashes series.
“I don’t think there’s any danger of that.”
Meanwhile Morgan said Kevin Pietersen would have an important role to play given the lack of experience in the England line-up.
“Kev offers a hell of a lot as a senior player and as a batsman,” Morgan said.
“He leads by example with the confidence with which he goes about his business. People rub off on that and that’s crucial.
“When I first came into the team, he was one of the more senior players and he was a guy you could turn to and ask difficult questions or have no hesitation in turning to him for a positive option.
“In that regard, I think he’s fantastic to have in the squad and back in for the one-day series.
Despite the absences of Bell and regular captain Cook, Morgan said Pietersen was not guaranteed to open the batting against Australia.
