England’s Cook wants to keep captaincy

England captain Alastair Cook says he’s desperate to stay on as both Test and one-day skipper despite his team’s disastrous tour of Australia.

Cook threw up the possibility of stepping down from the one-day captaincy after last week’s seven-wicket loss in Sydney, which gave Australia an unassailable 3-0 lead in the series.

Australia also won the Ashes 5-0, and Cook was clearly feeling the pressure of leading a flailing side riding a nine-game losing streak.

But during the week, England players pleaded with Cook to stay on as skipper, and the 29-year-old says he is now keen to keep the title.

“That was just an emotional time. We’d just lost another game,” Cook said of his comments last week when he said he’d consider standing down.

“I’m desperate to carry on now. I’m lucky enough to do this job.”

Cook said his team were desperate to end their losing run, which would extend to 10 should they lose Friday’s one-day clash at the WACA Ground.

“It’s not a run we’re proud of,” Cook said.

Cook averaged just 24.60 during England’s horror Ashes series.

But with England set to embark on a rebuild, his presence as skipper will be vital as the team brings in a host of fresh talent.

And with the one-day World Cup just over a year away, Cook is keen to lead his side back to winning ways.
