He holds the record for the highest score in a T20 International but for Aaron Finch, the one-day international game has been a little harder to conquer.
The Melbourne Renegades BBL skipper has been given the opportunity to open the innings for Australia with David Warner in Sunday’s first game of the five-match ODI series against England.
Finch has averaged 30.23 in his 18-match ODI career which has lagged behind his dazzling T20 stats which include 366 runs at 52.28 in nine internationals.
Last season’s BBL player of the year has been at his brutal best again with 262 runs in five matches this summer at an average of 65.50.
Two half-centuries in Australia’s ODI series loss to India in October 2013 provided further glimpses of Finch’s talents, but his scores dropped off and his series average was 31.66.
With in-form opener Shaun Marsh also in Australia’s ODI squad, Finch’s form will be under the microscope.
“You talk about the (2015) World Cup being not too far away. If you perform you’re going to get an opportunity to play in the World Cup,” Australia captain Michael Clarke said at the MCG.
“I don’t think it’d be fair to single out an individual player to say it’s extra important for him.
“You need to be performing because there’s guys around Australia who are performing.”
Clarke says he’s been impressed by 27-year-old Finch’s captaincy in the BBL, leading his side to a semi-final last season.
“Finchy has certainly got leadership qualities,” Clarke said.
“He has shown that at the Melbourne Renegades.
“He shows that around the group on a daily basis for us. He feels comfortable in this group now which is really good and I think you’ll see him play his best cricket.
“He has shown that in patches since he’s played one-day and T20 cricket for Australia. Everyone knows how gifted and talented he is.”
England captain Alastair Cook admits his players’ confidence levels have been damaged by their five-nil Ashes humiliation.
“If we win this one-day series we salvage some pride from our performances,” he said.
“It’s an exciting time for a lot of these young players in this side. They know they have a World Cup in a year’s time.
“There is a lot of places up for grabs.”
