Gayle, Pollard to miss NZ ODI series

Injury has ruled West Indies star duo Chris Gayle and Kieron Pollard out of the one-day international series against New Zealand starting later this month.

A 15-man squad named on Friday for the five-game series doesn’t feature explosive opener Gayle, who picked up an injury touring India last month, and world class allrounder Pollard, who is still recovering from a leg injury.

The pair weren’t available for this month’s three-Test series.

A West Indies Cricket Board statement said the pair could yet be considered for the two Twenty20 internationals in January.

In other changes from the side beaten 2-1 in the ODI series in India, left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul is replaced by fellow-tweaker Nikita Miller.

Batsmen Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Kieran Powell, seamer Shannon Gabriel and spinner Shane Shillingford are players from the Test squad not retained for the ODI series, which begins in Auckland on December 26.

The subsequent games are in Napier (December 29), Queenstown (January 1), Nelson (January 4) and Hamilton (January 8).

Players not involved in the Test series, including captain Dwayne Bravo, are scheduled to arrive in New Zealand on December 21 after a week-long camp in Barbados.

West Indies ODI squad: Dwayne Bravo (capt), Tino Best, Darren Bravo, Johnson Charles, Narsingh Deonarine, Kirk Edwards, Jason Holder, Nikita Miller, Sunil Narine, Kieran Powell, Denesh Ramdin, Ravi Rampaul, Darren Sammy, Marlon Samuels, Lendl Simmons.
