Preview:

It’s the season opener of BBL|03 and confidence is high in the Strikers camp. The core of the squad is coming off a Shield season that currently sees them sit on top of the table and with the addition of England’s T20 star Alex Hales, along with spinner Adam Zampa from the Sydney Thunder, the Strikers look well placed for a crack at the title.

Other new faces in the Strikers 13-man squad are ACT duo Jono Dean and Ben Oakley, while the in-form Phil Hughes will be able to add to the one game he played last season.

Bookies have been divided on who deserves favouritism for BBL|03 (named that way as it is the third season of the franchise style T20 competition). Strikers have been placed anywhere from joint favourites to among the outsiders.

Last time they met

Hurricanes v Strikers – Jan 5, 2013 @ Hobart

It was a memorable night for the Strikers who were victorious by 38 runs. ‘Maxy’ Klinger (71 not out) did the business with the bat while Kane Richardson (2/26) provided one of the highlights of the summer with a spectacular one-handed catch on the boundary.

Key players

The Hurricanes will be hoping to take full advantage of having Australia’s T20 captain George Bailey for this week at least. The Tasmanian was in remarkable form during Australia’s recent ODI tour of India which prompted his call up to the Australian Test team. In his three tests so far, he has looked at his best when scoring quickly – he took 28 off one Jimmy Anderson over while Australia pushed for a declaration. Strikers will be doing all they can to make sure the potential game breaker doesn’t do the same to them.

Not everyone can boast having the No.1 ranked T20 player in the world in their side. Actually, only the Strikers can boast that. Alex Hales took Australia apart while playing for England during T20 matches a few months back to claim the No.1 ranking from New Zealand’s Brendan McCullum and the Strikers will be hoping the form continues. If it does, the tall opening batsman could do more than just win the game in Hobart for his new team – he could take the Strikers deep into the finals.
