Former Test opener Phil Hughes has crafted the first century of his Australian domestic one-day career, anchoring South Australia’s 8-248 against Tasmania at Bellerive.
Hughes on Tuesday smacked 114 from 134 balls to continue the impressive early-season form that has him averaging 123 in the one-day tournament.
The 23-year-old, whose previous best in Australia was an unbeaten 97, had a life on 20 before he hit nine fours and a six to ensure the Redbacks posted a competitive total.
The hundred was the first of the summer for Hughes, who hit 95 not out in a one-dayer against Queensland and Sheffield Shield scores of 95 and 83 against the Bulls.
He brought up his ton off 120 balls when he flayed a wide ball from Ben Hilfenhaus to the extra cover boundary in the 42nd over and was out pulling to midwicket at 6-218.
Without him, the Redbacks would have been in trouble against the miserly Tigers’ attack after they were sent in on a relaid Bellerive surface.
Skipper Johan Botha chimed in with a much-needed 55 from 52 balls in support of the former New South Welshman, who made three centuries in a 17-match Test career.
Spinners Jason Krejza (4-58) and Xavier Doherty (0-42) bounced back from their mauling by Victoria on Sunday, while returning Test paceman Ben Hilfenhaus (1-74) made the initial breakthrough, removing Michael Klinger for 10.
But it was a double strike from paceman James Faulkner (2-44) in the 29th over, including the wicket of Dan Christian for a duck, that put the brakes on the Redbacks, who suddenly found themselves 4-127.
Both sides are 1-1 from their campaigns so far, with Tasmania having downed the Redbacks by three runs in Adelaide earlier this month.
