Hughes out for 25 as Redbacks struggle

Test aspirant Mitchell Johnson bowled without much luck as Western Australia took the upper hand in their Sheffield Shield clash with South Australia at the WACA Ground.

At tea on day one, the Redbacks were 7-177, with Joe Mennie unbeaten on 31 and Trent Lawford on six.

Opener Phil Hughes blew a good chance to push his case for an Ashes call-up after being dismissed for 25.

Hughes received a life on five when Cameron Bancroft dropped a tough one-handed chance at third slip.

But his luck ran out shortly after, with an attempted hook off the bowling of paceman Jason Behrendorff skying into the air for wicketkeeper Sam Whiteman to catch.

Johnson (1-64 from 16 overs) opened his day in horrendous fashion, with two of his first three deliveries called wides.

The 32-year-old, who is a hot favourite to earn an Ashes call-up for the first Test in Brisbane, was lucky not to have another two wides called during the over.

But he soon found his rhythm, and would have claimed the wicket of Sam Raphael in his second over had John Rogers held onto a diving, one-handed chance at gully.

Johnson’s second spell was particularly fiery, with a series of bouncers leaving the Redbacks’ batsmen hopping.

And the left-arm quick finally received some reward when he trapped Travis Head lbw for 51.

The Redbacks were cruising at 2-120 shortly after lunch, but two wickets apiece to Michael Hogan and Jason Behrendorff saw the visitors crash to 6-130.

Hogan, who claimed the wickets of Raphael (21), Hughes (25) and Kelvin Smith (5), has figures of 3-24 off 14 overs.
