The fast bowler who ripped through Australia’s top order in Wednesday’s game-four wash out won’t catch them by surprise again this one-day series.
Mohammed Shami was an unexpected inclusion in India’s lineup, taking the place of the out-of-form Ishant Sharma.
He certainly caught the Australians off-guard with an extra yard of pace – regularly pushing past 140km/h.
A handful of Australians had seen the 23-year-old in action when he played for India A this year, but commented amongst themselves that he had found extra pace on the Ranchi wicket.
He finished with 3-42, all three wickets coming in his first spell.
“He’s someone we haven’t seen in the series and he was a little bit quicker than what we expected,” Australian captain George Bailey said.
“He certainly got a bit of movement off the seam.
“That’s something to be pretty aware of for the rest of the series. That’s obviously what’s going to be coming at us.”
Shami’s dismissal of Phil Hughes, caught behind for 11, was sandwiched by terrific deliveries which jagged back off a length to clean bowl Aaron Finch (5) and Shane Watson (14).
He was unlucky not to be on a hat-trick, with Virat Kohli dropping Bailey immediately after the Hughes wicket.
Shami said the conditions were conducive to fast bowling, and that inspired him to send down some thunderbolts.
“How fast we bowl mostly depends on the conditions available,” he said.
“If there is some assistance, you get inspired to bowl quicker.
“As we saw today, if there is some swing, movement, you put in extra effort.”
