Johnson back in Aust ODI squad

Fast bowler Mitchell Johnson has won back a spot in the Australian ODI squad for the upcoming tour of England and Ireland.

Johnson has not played for Australia since the tour of South Africa late last year.

He was then sidelined for six months after undergoing major foot surgery.

“Mitchell Johnson is a very good cricketer with a great record and we want to see him back,” Australian chairman of selectors John Inverarity said on Thursday.

“He also is in strong contention for the ICC World Twenty20 and needs to be in the set-up and have some quality competitive cricket leading into this.”

NSW leg-spinning allrounder Steve Smith has also been included in the Australian team which will play five one-dayers against England and Ireland in June and July.

“Steve Smith has been rewarded for his late season form,” Inverarity said.

“He has also come into strong contention for the Australian ICC World Twenty20 squad to be named in August and the (selectors) are keen to have him in the set-up in England as the reserve batsman, noting that his leg-spinners would provide good variation to our attack.”

Opening batsman Ed Cowan will captain the Australia A team which will play four first-class matches in England in August.

Highly-regarded Tasmanian wicketkeeper Tim Paine has also earned a call-up for Australia A after a long stint on the sidelines due to a finger injury.
