Marsh brothers eye off Test reunion

Mitch Marsh wants his older brother Shaun to join him in the Test set-up this summer.

The 23-year-old is a strong chance to hold his spot for the first Test against India, starting at the Gabba on December 4, but he would love nothing more than for Shaun to join him in the side at some point in the near future.

The brothers have already featured together in two Twenty20 internationals for Australia, but they have set their sights on joining forces in the baggy green.

“That’s the goal,” Mitch said on Saturday.

“We both sort of sat down and said that’s something we want to do.

“I think it would be pretty special.

“Whether it happens this summer, next summer, or summers to come, fingers crossed it can happen one day.”

Shaun broke back into the Test side in February on the back of some hot domestic and one-day form, but his stint in the national side was short-lived.

A pair of ducks against South Africa in Port Elizabeth resulted in his axing, before a serious elbow injury that required surgery further disrupted his progress.

The 31-year-old made a duck in Western Australia’s Sheffield Shield win against Tasmania last week, but he can push his case for an international recall with a strong showing against Queensland in the day-night Shield clash at the WACA.

Mitch has been rested from the clash in order to leave him fresh for the upcoming five-match one-day series against South Africa, starting at the WACA next Friday.

It will be his first one-day international in Australia after playing his previous nine overseas.

Mitch said he was humbled to hear current skipper Michael Clarke label him as a potential future captain.

“It’s very nice to be spoken about in that light. I’m very appreciative of that,” Marsh said.

“I captained the Under 19s a few years ago and really enjoyed that role. And growing up in all my junior sides I always captained.

“But for me the biggest thing is trying to knuckle down a spot and keep improving.

“I’m sure as my career progresses it’s something that hopefully down the track I can look forward to doing.”
