McCullum must be contained: Tremlett

England’s bowlers have been handed some advice from afar on how to best bowl to New Zealand batting dynamo Brendon McCullum in the Twenty20 series decider in Wellington.

England paceman Chris Tremlett says McCullum needs to be contained in the third match on Friday if the tourists are to bounce back from the 55-run reversal at Hamilton on Tuesday.

The New Zealand captain showed why he is ranked the world’s best Twenty20 batsman with a blistering 74 off 38 balls to help his side level the series 1-1.

McCullum’s 1788 runs in 59 matches is nearly 500 runs more than any other batsman in the shortest form.

Towering Surrey bowler Tremlett, who is recovering from injury, says McCullum has developed a potent style suited to his quick handspeed but it can be countered.

“McCullum is one of the most dangerous players around. He’s like Kevin Pietersen in that he really gets you thinking all the way from ball one,” Tremlett told the county’s website.

“He likes to give himself room and hit through the off side – as I have found out to my cost on a few occasions.”

England skipper Stuart Broad was plundered for 33 runs off the 10 balls he bowled to his counterpart, with most of those deliveries short of a length.

Tremlett says every ball to McCullum should be different.

“You’ve got to try and pre-meditate what he’s going to do and mix up your deliveries. Maybe change your pace, go for a yorker or – if he’s trying to give himself room to hit through the off side – then go after him and follow his body.”

Tremlett identified Ross Taylor as the other Black Caps batting danger, even though the former skipper has fallen cheaply in the first two matches.

“He’s probably the opposite of McCullum though, in that he likes going through the leg side. For him you might go wider of off stump,” Tremlett said.
