New Zealand have tightened their grip on the opening Test of their two-match series with India in Auckland, wrapping up the visitors’ first innings for 202.

The tourists, replying to the Black Caps’ 503, added 72 runs for the loss of six wickets on the third morning, to find themselves 301 behind.

Black Caps skipper Brendon McCullum chose to bat again rather than enforce the follow-on.

It was fine bowling performance from the New Zealand attack, with Neil Wagner finishing with 4-64.

Wagner followed up the platform set by the opening pair of Trent Boult and Tim Southee, who had identical figures of 3-38.

The New Zealand attack came out on day three with the accent on bowling full and it paid early dividends as India lost two wickets for no runs in the space of seven balls.

Southee made the first breakthrough during the course of an excellent over.

He had Ajinkya Rahane, on 26, playing at a widish delivery and edging to Ross Taylor at first slip.

He followed with two excellent deliveries to new batsman MS Dhoni, the Indian skipper being made to play and missing.

India then lost Rohit Sharma, who had been the anchor of their innings, for 72, he played onto his stumps while facing Boult.

The bowling change to bring Wagner on produced an immediate reward.

He got some late swing to claim the prized wicket of Dhoni, who was caught by keeper BJ Watling for 10 to leave India wallowing at 7-167.

With the tail exposed, Wagner also accounted for Zaheer Khan, who hit three boundaries before being caught behind for 14 while swinging away again.

Wagner then saw Ishant Sharma dropped on the next delivery by Hamish Rutherford at short leg.

But Ishant didn’t survive much longer, trying to hit Southee over mid-off and being caught by Boult for a duck.

Wagner wrapped the innings, having Mohammed Shami snared in the slips for two, leaving Ravindra Jajeda unbeaten on 30.
