NZ set Australia 289 in Rose Bowl cricket

New Zealand batters Amy Satterthwaite and Suzie Bates delivered another pounding to Australia’s bowlers, with the Southern Stars set an imposing target at North Sydney Oval on Friday in the second Rose Bowl one-day cricket match.

After successfully chasing down 249 in game one at the SCG on Wednesday, the White Ferns smashed 6-288 after being sent in to bat.

Satterthwaite (109 off 119 balls) posted her maiden ODI century from 45 innings, just two days after being dismissed for 98, her seventh half-century.

She struck nine fours and two sixes and combined with her captain Bates (59 off 86) for their second century stand of the series.

Even the return of pace bowler Ellyse Perry (0-34 off six) couldn’t stem the tide of runs.

Her new ball partner Sharon Millanta (1-54 off 7) had Frances Mackay (16 off 13) caught behind by Australian captain Jodie Fields with the score at 23 in the fourth over.

Satterthwaite and Bates, who scored an unbeaten 122 on Wednesday, then inflicted more punishment on the bowlers following their 168-run partnership in game one.

They put on 115 in just over 25 overs.

New Zealand advanced to 2-240, as Satterthwaite and Sara McGlashan (51 off 51) kept the pressure on Australia with a 102-run stand at just over a run a ball after Bates was run out.

Sarah Coyte (2-55 off 10) dismissed Nicole Browne (7 off 12) and Rachel Priest (0 off 1) with successive deliveries in the 49th over.

But Katie Perkins (31 not out off 15) ensured the late fall of wickets didn’t slow New Zealand’s momentum, as 19 came off the final over of the innings bowled by Millanta.

Perry and Alyssa Healy came in for Leah Poulton and Alex Blackwell, while Mackay and Priest replaced Lucy Doolan and Katey Martin.

NZ allrounder Sophie Devine has been ruled out for the remainder of the series with a foot injury after straining a tendon, which kept her out of the first game.
