Otago have ensured they will compete in the Champions League Twenty20 tournament starting starting in India next week after a second emphatic win in the qualifying stage.

Led by blistering 64 off 32 balls from Dutch batsman Ryan ten Doeschate, Otago beat Sri Lankan side Kandurata Maroons by six wickets with 12 balls to spare in Chandigarh.

It follows an eight-wicket win over Pakistan’s Faisalabad Wolves and ensures the New Zealand side will line up in the lucrative 10-team Champions League, regardless the result of their final qualifying match against India’s unbeaten Sunrisers Hyderabad on Friday.

Ten Doeschate, 33, missed the Faisalabad game but was released by his English county Essex in time for the second match and showed why he is such a valuable T20 asset.

Chasing Kandurata’s 154-9 off 20 overs, Otago were limping at 62-2 through 10 overs following the cheap dismissal of captain Brendon McCullum.

Ten Doeschate struck five sixes – including three off successive deliveries from legspinner Kaushal Lokuarachchi – during an explosive fourth-wicket partnership with James Neesham (32 not out off 19) which realised 57 runs off five overs.

Earlier, seamer Ian Butler took 3-21 off his four overs while Ten Doeschate chipped in with 2-9 off two overs against a Kandurata lineup laden with Sri Lankan international players.
